Ezra Cruz

Ezra Rafael Cruz was a Puerto Rican trumpeter, singer, songwriter, producer, and model. Born in Ponce and raised in the Miami area, he studied at the Juilliard School and became a founding member of Charlie Rivera and the Band. His adult life included a long recovery from substance use disorder, permanent respiratory impairment after a severe illness, and a blended family with Nina Cruz, Nadia Beckford, Raffie Cruz, and Lia Cruz.

Early Life and Family

Ezra was born on July 29, 2006, to Marisol and Rafael Cruz. Rafael went ahead to the Miami area to secure construction work; Marisol moved there with Ezra when he was about two, reuniting the family. His younger sister, Luna, called him Z-Z.

His maternal grandmother, Teresa Dominguez, was a frequent presence in the family’s Miami-Dade life. She helped pass on Puerto Rican music, Spanish, and the family teachings “Con fuego y fe” and “Presentation is prayer.” Ezra’s paternal grandmother died before 2022.

Ezra began modeling at approximately six years old. Marisol managed his work and placed his earnings in a protected trust. He also received early musical training, began playing trumpet through school music programs, and studied guitar and voice.

Rafael developed chronic pain and substance dependence after a construction injury. He died from an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2022. Ezra found him unresponsive and called emergency services.

Education and Musical Development

Ezra entered the Juilliard School in fall 2024. His freshman roommate, Travis Yoon, was a violinist with then-undiagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. After Travis became critically ill in December 2024, Ezra remained closely involved during his initial hospitalization and treatment. Travis returned to Illinois in February 2025 and died that August, several weeks after Ezra’s nineteenth birthday.

Ezra did not return to student housing for his second year. He continued his Juilliard studies while taking paid music and modeling work in New York. During this period, he developed professional and personal connections with Charlie Rivera, Jacob Keller, Peter Liu, and Riley Mercer. They later formed Charlie Rivera and the Band, with Ezra serving as lead trumpeter and a principal vocalist for Spanish-language material.

Personality and Communication

Ezra was direct, competitive, expressive, and highly social. He often responded quickly and intensely, particularly when he believed someone he loved was in danger. In professional settings, he expected careful preparation and high musical standards from himself and his collaborators.

He communicated in English and Spanish and moved readily between them in conversation. His speech was fast, witty, and frequently teasing with people he trusted. He was physically expressive while speaking and often tapped or moved in rhythm when seated.

Ezra showed affection through practical help, gifts, music, and regular contact. Recovery and fatherhood required him to develop more consistent routines, accept accountability from other people, and distinguish support from control.

Cultural Identity

Ezra identified as Puerto Rican and maintained close ties to his family in Puerto Rico and Miami. Spanish remained part of his family life, public work, and songwriting. His music drew on Puerto Rican and broader Latin musical traditions alongside jazz, R&B, and other contemporary genres.

His work with bachata reflected cross-cultural collaboration and genre study rather than his Puerto Rican family heritage.

Health and Disability

Ezra was diagnosed around age nine or ten with severe ADHD, hyperactive type. His presentation included impulsivity, pronounced physical restlessness, emotional reactivity, and sustained attention during music.

Ezra’s substance use escalated after Rafael’s and Travis’s deaths. It continued through the aftermath of the Velvet Frame shooting, where Nina was critically wounded and Ezra was tased twice by responding police.

In January 2035, Ezra took a fentanyl-contaminated pill while touring in Berlin and experienced a near-fatal overdose. Logan Weston performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency help arrived. Ezra entered recovery after the overdose and remained in recovery while preparing for the birth of Raffie.

During Logan’s critical hospitalization in 2050, Ezra experienced a psychiatric crisis that included reckless driving and self-harm. A responding officer, Daniel Reyes, de-escalated the encounter and ensured that Ezra received psychiatric care rather than criminal processing.

Physical Characteristics and Style

Ezra was six feet two inches tall, with warm brown skin, dark curly hair, and brown eyes. He maintained his hair, clothing, and grooming carefully from childhood onward. His later clothing and performance routines incorporated access to inhalers and oxygen equipment when needed.

Ezra also used tattooing as a form of artistic and emotional processing. He gave experiences physical form through ink, including the notation around his left wrist, which he received as a promise while Travis was alive, and a second Travis tattoo made after Travis’s death. The later design concealed the capital ‘’T’’ from Travis’s handwriting within notation from the same score page.

Additional preferences, grooming routines, clothing, residences, vehicles, instruments, and personal items are documented in Ezra Cruz (Preferences and Trivia) and the associated item files.
